Sister Miriam George Kelly, IHM

Sister Miriam George Kelly (formerly Elizabeth Mary Kelly) died in Camilla Hall on February 13, 2024, in the 75th year of her religious life relatively shy of her 97th birthday. Sister was born on May 12, 1927, in Philadelphia. Her parents George and Elizabeth (Duffy) Kelly raised their son and their daughter in Philadelphia.

“Betty” attended Most Blessed Sacrament Elementary School (1934-1941) and West Catholic Girls’ High School (1942-1946). While in Community, Sister earned her A.B. degree in Education from Immaculata College.

Betty entered the Congregation on February 2, 1949; she received her habit and her religious name, Sister Miriam George on August 16, 1949 and she professed First Vows on August 15, 1951.

Sister began her teaching ministry at Our Lady of Pompeii School in the fall of 1951. Sister worked with children in grades one through four during her six years at Our Lady of Pompei until being transferred to St. Augustine School in Bridgeport in the fall of 1957.

From the fall of 1957, Sister Miriam George did a masterful job teaching only first grade children through the school year ending in 1994. Sister taught first graders in St. Joseph Downingtown; St. Anselm Philadelphia; St. Clement Philadelphia; St. Teresa of Avila Valley Forge; Our Lady of Grace Somerdale; St. Joseph Aston; and St. John Bosco Hatboro.

In the fall of 1994 through the school year ending in 2004, Sister Miriam George taught precious Kindergartners in the Early Childhood Kindergarten Program at Immaculata College. Sister was known throughout the Community as an outstanding professional serving the ‘little ones.” Sister was a perfect example of a dedicated and spiritual IHM Sister who served the Lord while serving His Little Ones.

For the next 15 years, Sister Miriam George remained at Immaculata University in the Work Study Office ministering to college students. Sister worked as diligently with these students as she did with the younger children.

In November 2019 Sister Miriam George joined the Apostolate of Prayer community at Camilla Hall. Sister’s service at Camilla Hall was equal in quality and dedication as it was while Sister served in the classroom. May her beautiful soul rest in peace.

In addition to her IHM Community, her nieces, nephew, grandniece and grandnephews survive Sister Miriam George; Sister’s parents George F. Kelly and Elizabeth M. Kelly (Duffy) and her brother George F. Kelly Jr. (Jean) predecease Sister.

Reverend Joseph Devlin (Homilist) celebrated Sister Miriam George’s Funeral Mass on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. Reverend John Burger, SSC, Reverend Michael Greco O.F.M. Cap., and Reverend Thomas Viviano concelebrated this Liturgy. Deacon Jack Betzel joined the priests around the altar.
