Theme:   Women of Wisdom and Courage: The Legacy of Clare of Assisi, Julian of Norwich and Teresa of Avila for Today
Clare, Julian and Teresa each lived in turbulent times which needed for bold vision and spiritual fortitude.  Clare of Assisi (1193-1253) established a movement of Poor Ladies in deep collaboration with Francis and, for nearly three decades after his death, she advocated for the spiritual principles of the movement they founded together.  We will explore her courage under papal pressure to accept an endowment and the spiritual depth of her teachings to her community.  Julian of Norwich (1342-c.1423) lived during the time of the Black Death.  A recluse associated with the church of St. Julian, she was recognized by her contemporaries for her wisdom and was often consulted for spiritual counsel.  We will explore her vision of God, the richness of God’s love, and the depth of relationship that God calls us into.  Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) is well known for her profound teachings on prayer and the mystical life.  When we consider that she wrote during a time of Inquisitional scrutiny, her courage is all the more admirable.  We will explore her insights into how to live into collaborative relationship with God.  Each of these women provide Christianity with insights that transcend time.  They can speak to us across the ages and give us the encouragement and wisdom our world needs today.
