Restore Mary’s Grotto

Mary’s Grotto at Immaculata University serves as a quiet sanctuary of prayer and reflection, embodying a spiritual legacy of the Immaculata University campus and the devotion of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

While the specific construction date of the current stone structure is not widely publicized in general histories, its origins and significance are deeply rooted in the university’s identity.

A Legacy of Devotion

  • Marian Roots: Founded in 1920 as Villa Maria College, Immaculata has always been dedicated to the Blessed Mother. The Grotto is a replica of the famous apparition site in Lourdes, France, where the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous in 1858, identifying herself as the “Immaculate Conception”—the very title from which the university takes its name.

  • A Place of Tradition: For decades, the Grotto has been a central location for campus traditions, including the planting of the ivy, May Crownings, outdoor Masses, and quiet moments of petition.

  • The IHM Spirit: Our IHM Sisters who founded the university brought with them a profound Alphonsian spirituality, which emphasizes a close, personal relationship with Mary. The Grotto was established to provide a physical space where students and faculty could withdraw from the busyness of academic life to find peace.

Restoration and Renewal

Over the years, the Grotto has undergone various phases of maintenance to preserve its natural beauty. In recent years, the Grotto has proven to be a safety concern, thus recently shutting off access.

Relocating and restoring the Grotto will ensure all members of the University, and visitors from the community can access the site as it remains a beacon of light and a place of living water for the campus.
