Sister Maureen Ruth Weisglass died in Camilla Hall on June 21, 2023, in the 39th year of her religious life after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Mary Ruth was born on March 8, 1964. Her parents, Bernard and Ann Louise (Hanlon) Weisglass settled in Sacred Heart Parish in Lancaster where they raised their family of six children.
Mary Ruth attended Sacred Heart, Riverton (1971-1972), Riverton Elementary (1972-1974), St. Clement Parish School (1975-1977) and Sacred Heart Parish School (1977-1979), followed by Lancaster Catholic High School (1979-1982). Subsequently, Mary Ruth earned a degree from Immaculata College in Theology/History; and an MSE degree from Neumann College.
Mary Ruth entered the Congregation on September 8, 1983; she received her habit and her religious name, Sister Maureen Ruth, on August 11, 1984; and professed her First Vows on August 14, 1986.
Throughout Sister’s teaching ministry, beginning in the fall of 1986 through the school year ending 2016, Sister instructed children in grades 2, 3, and 4. Aside from being an excellent teacher, Sister was very gentle, kind, and patient with her young charges. Sister instructed children in Our Lady of Fatima, Secane; St. Monica, Philadelphia; Holy Saviour, Norristown; St. Martin of Tours, Philadelphia; St. Cecilia, Coatesville; St. Dominic, Philadelphia; and Villa Maria Academy Lower School in, Malvern.
During the academic year 2016-2017, Sister’s Mom became ill and later died in 2021. Sister Maureen Ruth served her family and cared for her dear mother during this period. Sister herself was gradually succumbing to the ravages of cancer, but her dear Mom never knew it. God rest each of them. After a valiant struggle, Sister Maureen Ruth chose to stop all treatments and she slipped into the Hands of God surrounded by her loving IHM Sister, Sister Mary Lisa, and our faithful IHM Sisters at Camilla Hall on Sunday, June 11, 2023.
Sister Maureen Ruth Weisglass is survived by her loving and faithful IHM Sister, Sister Mary Lisa; her Local IHM Community at Sacred Heart in Lancaster; our IHM Congregation as a whole; her siblings Louise Weisglass, Maureen Rineer, Bernard, and David (Kandy) and nieces and nephews. Sister’s dear parents Bernard and Ann Louise (Hanlon) Weisglass predecease Sister Maureen Ruth.
Reverend Msgr. Richard Youtz (Homilist), Rev. Louis Bellopede, Rev. John Burger, SCC, Rev. Michael Metzgar, and Rev. Andrew Stommer concelebrated Sister Maureen Ruth’s Funeral Mass on Monday, July 3, 2023.
