Sister Mary K. King, IHM

Sister Mary K. King, formerly Sister Mary Kevin, died in Camilla Hall on Monday, March 28, 2022 in the 70th year of her religious life.

Mary was born on January 28, 1934 in Philadelphia.  Her parents Samuel and Grace (Donne) King raised the large family in Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Philadelphia.

Sister Mary attended Good Shepherd and Most Blessed Sacrament Elementary Schools followed by West Catholic Girls’ High School from which she graduated in 1952.  Not long after high school graduated, Mary entered the community on September 8, 1952.  She received her habit and her religious name, Sister Mary Kevin, on March 9, 1952.  Sister pronounced her First Vows on March 9, 1955.

From March 1955 through June 2008, Sister Mary ministered as a classroom teacher; through her ministry, Sister taught children in grades K through Six.  Sister touched countless lives throughout her ministry.  Sister served in St. Anastasia, Newtown Square; Seven Dolors, Wyndmoor; Incarnation, Trenton; St Matthew, Philadelphia, Immaculado Corazon in Peru (from January 1963 through August 1968); St. Thomas More, Arlington; St. William, Philadelphia; Our Lady of Charity, Brookhaven; St. James, Savannah; Good Shepherd, Philadelphia; SS. Peter and Paul, Decatur and Queen of Peace in Ardsley.

After ministering as a full-time classroom instructor, Sister provided Religious Enrichment for children in Grades K through Eight at St. Matthew in Forestville, CT. from August 2008 through the school year ending 2012.  Then, from August 2012 through September 2016, Sister rendered joyful service in the school office at St. Gabriel, Philadelphia.

Sister Mary went to Camilla Hall in October 2016 where she continued her joyful service within the Apostolate of Prayer and Assistance throughout Camilla Hall until her death on March 28, 2022.  God rest her sweet soul!

Her IHM Community, her Camilla Community, her brother Thomas J. King (Ann), her sisters-in-law Theresa (Francis X.), and Regina (Samuel) as well as her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces/nephews survive Sister Mary.  Sister’s parents Samuel Aloysius and Grace (Donne) King, her sisters Margaret Hartley (Dyess), Dorothy O’Hara (John), her brothers James F., Francis X, and Samuel predecease Sister.

Reverend Herbert Sperger celebrated Sister’s Funeral Mass on Monday, April 4, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. and delivered the homily; Reverend John Berger, Reverend Msgr. William Lynn, and Reverend Donald McNamara concelebrated.
