Sister Mary Elizabeth Maguire, formerly Sister Elizabeth Maureen, died in Camilla Hall on Sunday, November 5, 2023 in the 68th year of her religious life.
Mary Elizabeth was born on May 3, 1937. Francis and Elizabeth Maguire raised their family of eight in St. Bridget’s Parish in Philadelphia. Mary Elizabeth attended St. Vincent DePaul Elementary (1943-1951) and Little Flower High School (1951-1955).
Shortly after graduation from high school, Mary Elizabeth entered the Community on September 8, 1955. While in Community, Elizabeth earned an A.B. degree in Elementary Education from Immaculata College and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Mary Elizabeth received her habit and her religious name Sister Elizabeth Maureen on March 8, 1956 and pronounced her First Vows on August 15, 1957.
From the school year beginning in 1957 through the school year ending in 1999, Sister did a beautiful job teaching elementary aged children in grades 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6. Sister served these children, their families, and parishioners in Hatboro, St. John Bosco; Girardville, St. Joseph; Reading, St. Joseph; Mt. Carmel, Holy Spirit; Newtown, St. Andrew; West Chester, St. Agnes; Philadelphia, St. Joan of Arc; Fairless Hills, St. Frances Cabrini; and in Bensalem, St. Charles.
Sister’s next mission was to serve in Queen of Peace Parish in Ardsley. In the fall of 1999 through the school year ending in 2010, Sister Elizabeth’s ministry was one of clerical assistant first in the office of the Director of Religious Education, secondly as a valuable assistant in school.
With heart and hands full of gracious deeds, Sister entered the Apostolate of Prayer/Assistance Community at Camilla Hall in August 2017. Sister served generously and prayerfully throughout her residency. Sister died peacefully on November 5, 2023. God rest you, dear Sister.
In addition to her IHM Community, Sister Mary Elizabeth is survived by her sister Judith Musi and her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Sister is predeceased by her dear parents Francis C. Maguire and Elizabeth (McKenzie) Maguire; her brothers James (Betty), Frank (Rose), Jack (Rosemary), and Vince (Trudy); and her sisters Marie T. Spraggins (George) and Joanne Granberg (Misha) and her brother-in-law William.
