Sister Mary Anne Nyzio died on February 5, 2021 in Camilla Hall. Sister Mary Anne was in the 63rd year of her religious life. Sister’s death was not Covid related.
Mary Anne Nyzio was born on October 8, 1940. Her parents, Stanley and Helen (Hohenstein) Nyzio raised their family of four in St. Joachim Parish in Philadelphia. Mary Anne attended St. Joachim Elementary School and Little Flower High School. Mary Anne graduated from Little Flower in 1958. In July 1958, she entered our IHM Congregation.
Mary Anne received her habit and her religious name, Sister Therese of Carmel, on January 16, 1959. Sister Therese pronounced her First Vows on January 17, 1961. Shortly after Profession, and until the end of that school year, Sister taught third grade children at St. Philip & James School while residing at Camilla Hall. Sister then taught at Holy Family in Philadelphia for a year and a half.
In January 1963 through August 1968, Sister Therese taught children at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Peru. Upon Sister’s return from South America, she spent the next three years teaching at St. John Bosco in Hatboro. In August of 1971, Sister returned to South America, Sister went to Osorno, Chile where she served the children and the Chilean people at San Mateo in Osorno and San Francisco at Las Condes. Sister Therese of Carmel returned to the States in January 1980 where she spent a limited time teaching third grade children at St. Agatha/St. James in Philadelphia.
In August 1980, Sister served as Superior and Principal at St. Eugene Convent/School for two and a half years, after which Sister returned to South America until 1990. When Sister returned to the States, Sister taught at Holy Innocents, Philadelphia for one year, and served as Superior/Principal at Holy Name in Philadelphia for three years. In 1994, our congregational leadership appointed Sister Mary Anne Nyzio Regional Superior, this term of office concluded in June 2000.
On April 27, 2000, the General Chapter Delegation voted Sister Mary Anne Nyzio to serve as the First Councilor to our General Council. Sister’s installation was on June 18, 2000. This term of office concluded in June 2006. Not surprisingly, Sister Mary Anne returned to Peru where she ministered to the needs of those in Montenegro. Sister returned to Philadelphia in August 2012 and worked diligently through August 2017 teaching literacy skills to adults.
In August 2017, Sister joined the Apostolate of Prayer Community at Camilla Hall. She rendered fruitful service all of her life and it was no different at Camilla Hall. Sister died peacefully on February 5, 2021.
In addition to her Congregation of IHM Sisters, her brother, James E. Nyzio, her sisters-in-law Carol and Carol (Robert) and her loving nieces, grandnieces, and grandnephews survive Sister Mary Ann. Her parents Stanley and Helen, her sister Bernadette Nyzio and her brother Robert Nyzio predecease Sister.
The Visitation and Funeral Mass for Sister Mary Anne was private. During this time of the Covid pandemic, a limited number of family members were invited to attend. We celebrated Sister’s Funeral Mass in Camilla Hall on Friday, February 12, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. Reverend Louis Monica celebrated Sister’s Funeral Liturgy and delivered a meaningful homily.
