Sister Maria Prudens Wright, IHM

Sister Maria Prudens Wright died in Camilla Hall on November 16, 2022, in the 75th year of her religious life, just shy of her 96th birthday.

Marie Anna Wright was born on February 20, 1927.  Marie’s parents Harry Wright and Anna V. (Jones) Wright raised their family of four in St. Edward Parish in Philadelphia. Marie attended St. Edward Elementary School (1933-1941) and Little Flower High School (1941-1945). Later while in Community, Sister earned degrees from Immaculata College and Saint Charles Seminary.

Marie entered our Congregation on September 8, 1946; she received her habit and her religious name, Sister Maria Prudens, on April 7, 1947; and Sister professed her First Vows on August 15, 1952.

Sister Maria Prudens entered her teaching ministry in April 1949. Throughout her ministry, Sister instructed children in grades 2 through 8; Sister was a full-time educator until the school year ending in 1988. Sister served children and families in many parishes.  In the Philadelphia area, Sister taught children at St. Monica, St. Cecilia, St. Edmond, St. Raphael, St. Joachim, St. Anselm, St. Martin of Tours; Blessed Virgin Mary, Darby; St. Madeline Ridley Park; St. Laurence Upper Darby; Immaculate Conception, Germantown; Sacred Heart, Reading, St. John Bosco Hatboro, and St. Joseph Warrington.  Outside of the Philadelphia area, Sister worked with children in St. Michael Annandale, VA and St. James, Falls Church, VA.

From August 1982 through August 1984, Sister Prudens rendered served to our Sisters at Camilla Hall; after which, she resumed teaching children through the school year ending 1988.

Very generously, Sister served our Sisters once again as a staff member at Camilla Hall through August 1994. In the fall of 1994 through August 2010, Sister served as a Pastoral Visitor at St. David Parish in Willow Grove.  In the fall of 2010, Sister returned to her beloved Camilla Hall and rendered unwavering service until she was no longer able to do so. God rest her untiring service as a beloved IHM Sister.

In addition to her IHM Community, Sister is survived by her brother Joseph T. Wright and sister-in-law Barbara, her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Her parents Harry J. Wright and Anna (Jones) Wright, her brothers Harry J. Wright Jr. (Rosemary) James P. Wright, and her sister Anna M. Kline (George Douglas) and her sister-in-law Margaret predecease Sister Maria Prudens.

Reverend Msgr. Richard T. Bolger was the main celebrant and homilist for Sister Maria Prudens’ Funeral Mass on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at 10:30 a.m.  Rev. Msgr. Wilfred Pashley, Rev. Anthony Rossi, Rev. Richard P. Connors and Rev. John Burger, SSC concelebrated.
