Sister M. Frances Stevenson, IHM

Sister M. Frances Stevenson (formerly Sister M. Frances Anne) died in Camilla Hall on June 15, 2022 in the 64th year of her religious life.

Frances Stevenson was born on April 5, 1938.  Her parents John and Mary (Seaman) Stevenson raised their family of three daughters and two sons in St. Peter Parish in Reading, PA.

Frances attended St. Peter Elementary School (1944-1952) and Reading Catholic High School (1952-1956).  Later while in Community, Sister earned degrees from Immaculata College and Glassboro State College.

Frances entered the Community on July 16, 1958; she received her habit and her religious name Sister M. Frances Anne on January 16, 1959.  In 1988, the community members had the option to return to their baptismal names, Sister Frances chose to do that.  Sister Frances pronounced her First Vows on January 17, 1966.

Sister Frances’ classroom teaching ministry extended from January 1961 through the school year ending 1998.  Sister taught children in St. Joseph Frackville, St. Francis de Sales Philadelphia, Holy Innocents Philadelphia, St. Gertrude Conshohocken, St. Aloysius Academy Bryn Mawr, Immaculate Heart Chester, Gesu Philadelphia.  Sister served as Principal and Superior of the local convent in Annunciation Shenandoah and St. Margaret School in Reading.

In the fall of 1998, Sister worked with children in the Religious Education Enrichment Program.  Sister served in Holy Trinity Catholic School in Bridgeport for six years, in Sacred Heart School in Lancaster for three years, and St. Ephrem School in Bensalem for five years.  It is very clear that Sister Frances touched the hearts and souls of the children and the families to whom and with whom she ministered.

In the fall of 2012, Sister Frances continued her ministry of prayer and service at Camilla Hall.  Sister served faithfully in this mission as in all of her missions until her death on Wednesday, June 15.

In addition to her IHM Community, her brothers Joseph Stevenson (Patricia), John Stevenson (Dolores), her sister Maryann Stubbs (Nelson), and her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, survive Sister Frances.  Her parents John and Mary (Seaman) Stevenson and her sister Rosemarie LaFata (Vincent) predecease Sister.

Reverend John Burger, SSC celebrated Sister’s Funeral Mass on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at 10:30 a.m.
