Sister M. Ann Coyle, IHM

Sister Ann Coyle, formerly Sister Philip Marie Coyle, died in Lankenau Hospital on June 30, 2022 in the 70th year of her religious life.

Ann was born on May 20, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA.  Her parents Philip H. and Anna (Sheehan) Coyle raised their family of five in St. Edmond Parish in Philadelphia.  Ann attended St. Edmond Elementary School (1938-1946) and Hallahan High School (1946-1950).  Later while in Community, she earned an A.B. Degree from Immaculata College in Economics and an M.A. in Economics from Temple University.

Ann entered the Community on February 2, 1952, received her habit and her religious name Sister Marie Philip on August 18, 1952 (in the late 80s Sister returned to using her baptismal name).  Sister professed her First Vows on August 16, 1954.

From the fall of 1954 through the school year ending 1978, Sister served students from many different parishes and on many different levels.  Sister Ann taught children at St. Augustine Bridgeport, St. Agnes West Chester, St. Barnabas Philadelphia, St. Francis de Sales Philadelphia, St. Maria Goretti High School, St. Laurence Upper Darby, Immaculata High School Somerville, NJ, St. Monica Business School, Notre Dame High School Miami, and Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Shamokin.

Most notably Sister Ann spent the next 41 years of her educational ministry at Immaculata University.  Sister went “to the College” in the fall of 1978, and whole heartedly served there through September 2019.  Sister Ann touched countless souls during her IHM journey, may she enjoy the blessed peace that is now hers.

In addition to our IHM Community, particularly our Sisters at Gillet Hall, her many nieces and nephews survive Sister Ann.  Her parents Philip H. Coyle and Anna Coyle (Sheehan), her brothers Philip H. Coyle, Jr., James Coyle, Francis Coyle and her sister Betty Schoppe predecease Sister.

Reverend Michael Callaghan, C.M. celebrated Sister’s Funeral Mass on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 10:30 a.m.
