Sister Loretta Michael Pinner died in Camilla Hall on April 9, 2025, just shy of her 92nd birthday. Sister Loretta Michael, known as Mickey to many members of the Community, died in the 73rd year of her religious life. Sister was born on May 3, 1933, in Philadelphia. Her parents James Pinner and Lucy (Clay) Pinner were born in Philadelphia and raised their family of seven in St. Edmond and St. Gabriel Parishes in South Philadelphia.
“Mickey” attended St. Gabriel Elementary School (1939-1947) and West Catholic Girls’ High School (1947-1952). Later, while in Community, Sister earned a A.B. degree in History from Immaculata College and an M.S. degree in Business from Marywood College.
Mickey entered the Congregation on September 8, 1952; she received her habit and her religious name, Sister Loretta Michael, on March 9, 1953, and she professed First Vows on March 9, 1955.
Sister Loretta Michael began her teaching ministry in March 1955. Sister taught elementary-grade children through June 1968. Sister taught in a variety of places and loved each child along the way. Sister ministered at St. Joseph Reading, St. John of the Cross Roslyn, St. Mary Coaldale, St. Ann Lansford, and St. Dominic Philadelphia.
In the fall of 1968 through the school year ended 1986, Sister Loretta Michael taught various subjects in the Business Education curriculum. Sister served students at the following High Schools, well known for their excellent Business Departments. Sister served at Archbishop Ryan, St. Maria Goretti High School, Notre Dame Academy Miami, Bishop Shanahan West Chester, Immaculata Somerville and Bishop Kenrick Norristown.
In the fall of 1986, Sister kept close ties with the ‘business end’ of high schools but not as a ‘business’ teacher. From 1986 through June 1994 Sister Loretta applied her many skills and lovely manner to serving the needs of the Cardinal O’Hara High School community while working in the Financial Office. For the next eight years Sister assisted students who were working in the Computer Lab at St. Hubert High School. In August 2002, Sister Loretta went to St. Monica School where she served as a Computer Assistant in the school office.
After serving students, families, parishioners, and other Sisters for 53 years in classroom settings, Sister Loretta Michael brought all her loving ways of service and fidelity to Camilla Hall where she continued to serve our Sisters in prayer and in action until her death on April 9, 2025. May God rest her beautiful soul.
In addition to her IHM Community, her nieces, nephews, grandnieces, great grandnieces and great grandnephews survive Sister Loretta Michael. Sister is predeceased by her parents James J. Pinner and Lucy M. (Clay) Pinner, her brothers James (Rita), Robert, and Albert (Eleanor) her sisters Ann Kelly (Edward), Kay Long (Thomas) and Lucille Ryan (Frank).
