Sister Claudine M. Hagerty, IHM (formerly Sister Maria Claudia) died in Camilla Hall on, Monday, August 30, 2021 in the 76th year of her religious life.
Sister Claudine was born on July 25, 1926. Her parents, George and Claudine (Smith) Hagerty raised the family of four in St. Timothy Parish in Philadelphia. Claudine attended St. Bernard and St. Timothy Elementary Schools then to St. Hubert High School where she graduated in 1944. Before entering the community, she attended Immaculata College for one year before entering the Community on September 8, 1945. Sister completed her undergraduate work at Immaculata followed later by a degree at St. Bonaventure.
Claudine entered the Community on September 8, 1945; she received her habit and her religious name, Sister Maria Claudia, on April 22, 1946. Sister made her First Profession of Vows on August 15, 1948.
Sister Maria Claudia taught elementary grade children from the fall of 1948 through the school year ending 1953. Sister taught children at Most Blessed Sacrament, St. Martin of Tours, and St. John the Baptist.
In the fall of 1953, Sister taught English to high school students through the school year ending in 1980. Sister taught at St. Edward in Shamokin; Villa Maria in Santiago, Chile; Archbishop Prendergast in Drexel Hill; Lancaster Catholic in Lancaster; Immaculate Heart in Fountain Springs; Bishop Kenrick in Norristown; and Little Flower in Philadelphia.
In the fall of 1980 through the school year ending in 1993, Sister served at Immaculata College as the Dean of Admissions.
In August 1993, Sister was appointed Superior of Epiphany Convent in Miami; in school, Our Lady of Lourdes, Sister taught English. At the end of Sister’s term of office, she went to reside at Immaculate Heart Convent in Arlington, VA and she taught part time and served as Department Chairperson at Bishop Denis O’Connell High School.
Sister returned to Immaculata University in the fall of 2006 where she served as a valued Learning Center Assistant until shortly before her death. God rest her beautiful soul.
Sister Claudine’s parents George and Claudine (Smith) Hagerty; her brothers and sisters-in-law David (Marie); George (Dolores); William, and her nephew David predecease Sister Claudine. Sister is survived by nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews; her local IHM Community at Gillet; and her IHM Community at large.
