Sister Andrew Marie Cavanaugh, IHM

Sister Andrew Marie Cavanaugh died in Camilla Hall on January 8, 2026 in Camilla Hall.  Sister died in the 76th year of her religious life. Marie Cavanaugh was born on August 23, 1932. Her parents Andrew and Marie (Moran) Cavanaugh raised Marie and her twin sister, Kathryn, in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in South Philadelphia. Marie attended Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School (1938-1946), and Hallahan High School (1946-1950). Later, while in Community, Sister earned her degree in Elementary Education from Immaculata.

On September 8, 1950, Marie entered the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Marie received her habit and her religious name, Sister Andrew Marie, on March 26, 1951, and pronounced her First Vows on April 5, 1953.

Throughout Sister Andrew’s teaching ministry, which began in April 1953 and ended in June 2001, Sister served faithfully in the parish schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Sister taught children in St. William, Our Lady of Fatima, St. Mark-Ephrem, Sacred Heart (Lancaster), St. Madeleine, St. John the Baptist, St. Charles, St. Joseph, and St. Anselm.

In the fall of 2013, Sister went to St. Raymond Convent in the Villas, New Jersey, to serve at St. John Neumann Parish in the Religious Education Program.

In January 2023, Villa Maria by-the-Sea Convent and Retreat House opened its doors to receive Sister Andrew Marie as the fifth member of that local community. Sister served her Sisters in the local community as well as those making retreat.

Sudden illness brought Sister Andrew Marie to Camilla in December 2025 and on January 8, 2026 Sister entered into eternal rest.

Sister Andrew Marie is survived by her IHM Community, her twin sister Kathryn (Cavanaugh) Monroe, her nephew William (Sheryl), niece Mary Ann and grandnephews. Sister was predeceased by her parents Andrew Cavanaugh and Marie (Moran) Cavanaugh and her brother-in-law William Monroe.

Sister Andrew Marie Cavanaugh’s Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Reverend William Kelly was the main celebrant and homilist. Father Kelly was joined around the altar with Reverend Frank Chambers, OSA, Reverend Peter DiMaria, Reverend William Quinn, Reverend James Betz, Reverend Raymond Gormley, Reverend Kevin DiPrinzio OSA, Reverend Aldo, OSA, Reverend George Majoros, Reverend William Trader, O.Praem, and Deacon Charles Devlin.
