Soul on Fire
A Movie with a Theme of Transformation
As a community, we have reflected on the theme of transformation. This movie may speak to our hearts. “Soul on Fire” takes place in St. Louis where the movie was filmed. It is a true story. The O’Leary family is a faith-filled family, with vigilant parents and several children. John is one of the children. John saw a can of gasoline, and he struck the match which resulted in burns to 100% of his body. The interior of their home was destroyed, leaving only the framework. We see John’s father in the hospital chapel praying that his son will survive. A male nurse befriends John and cares for him, as the bandages needed to be changed every day.
Mr. O’Leary expresses his gratitude that the son lived, the only thing that really mattered to him. Despite the scars all over his body, John eventually grows into a handsome teenager with a beautiful smile. If you have not seen this movie, do yourself a favor, rent it, as “Soul on Fire” is heartwarming and it is a joy to witness John’s transformative positivity!
