gifts from friends we’ve yet to meet
by Virginia Herbers
In the book, gifts from friends we’ve yet to meet, the author invites us to meet several “anonymous” but profoundly impacting persons in the Gospel and reflect on their stories. These unnamed individuals provide us with a descriptive encounter with Jesus and each of their experiences has something to teach us. While we may not be told the names of these gospel characters, this in no way detracts from the significance of these persons meeting Jesus in very unique circumstances. What is shared in this book about these nameless individuals who connect with Jesus in familiar stories is not academic or theological but rather personal.
In the reader’s getting to know these gospel figures better, Herbers suggests that most likely they have a gift to offer us as we live out our own spiritual journey. As the author states “They are dear friends we just haven’t met yet, and each of their ages- old encounters with Jesus contains a gift for you and for me – today.”
