Sister Mary Denise Hutt, IHM

Sister Mary Denise Hutt died in Camilla Hall on July 2, 2024 in the 66th year of her religious life. Sister was born on June 26, 1940. Sister’s parents George and Rose (Mountain) Hutt raised Mary Ann and her three brothers in St. Matthew Parish in Philadelphia.

Mary Ann attended St. Matthew Elementary School and St. Hubert High School for Girls. Later, while in Community, Sister earned her BA degree from Immaculata College in Elementary Education and her R.N. degree from Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Mary Ann Hutt entered the Congregation on July 16, 1958; she received her habit and her religious name, Sister Mary Denise, on January 16, 1959 and professed her First Vows on January 17, 1961.

Shortly after First Profession, Sister Mary Denise taught children in elementary school as did nearly all of our Sister after professing First Vows. Sister Mary Denise taught 5th and 6th grade children in Assumption BVM School in West Grove from January 1961 through June 1964. In the fall of 1964 through June 1969, Sister served 6th and 7th grade students at Immaculate Conception School in Philadelphia. At this point Sister’s ministry of service took a major turn.

As a Community we are and were blessed that Sister Mary Denise said “Yes” to the opportunity to study for her Nursing degree at Bryn Mawr. Accomplishing this feat, Sister served our infirmed Sisters in Camilla Hall professionally, reverently, joyfully, and faithfully from the fall of 1969 almost completely to the time of her death on July 2, 2024.

In addition to her IHM Community, especially her local community at Camilla Hall, Sister is survived by her nieces, nephew, grandnieces and grandnephews. Sister is predeceased by her parents George R. Hutt, Jr. and Rose C. (Mountain) Hutt; her brothers George R. Hutt (Janet), John F. Hutt (Ambrosia), and Joseph C. Hutt.

Reverend John Burger, SSC, (Homilist) and Reverend Joseph P. McLaughlin, O.Praem concelebrated Sister Mary Denise’s Funeral Mass on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.
