Sister Marie A. Maynes, formerly Sister M. Charles Elizabeth, died in Camilla Hall on Wednesday, February 17 in the 57th year of her religious life. Though Sister’s health was declining, her death was rather unexpected.
Marie was born on August 23, 1942 in Philadelphia. Her parents Charles and Elizabeth (McCormac) Maynes raised their family of three children in St. Helena Parish. Marie attended St. Helena Elementary School and Cardinal Dougherty High School. Marie graduated from high school in 1960. Marie worked for two years as a secretary/receptionist before entering the Community.
Marie entered the Community on September 8, 1962; she received her habit and her religious name Sister M. Charles Elizabeth on June 27, 1963. Sister Charles Elizabeth pronounced her First Vows on June 27, 1965.
During the course of Sister’s teaching ministry, Sister taught students in elementary school, high school, and college from 1965 through 1994. From the fall of 1965 through June 1971, Sister taught elementary aged children in St. Augustine in Bridgeport, Assumption in Feasterville, and St. James in Savanna. In the fall of 1971, Sister taught high school students at Archbishop Carroll High School in Radnor for just one year then to Denis O’Connell in Arlington Virginia until June 1978. Sister Marie then taught students at Immaculata College from the fall of 1978 through August 1981. Sister returned to teaching high school students at Lourdes Regional in Mt. Carmel from August 1981 through June 1984.
Congregational leadership appointed Sister Marie Maynes superior and principal of St. Patrick Convent/School in York from August 1984 through August 1990. At the end of Sister’s term of office, she joined the faculty at Bishop McDevitt High School in Wyncote until the school year ending 1994.
Congregational leadership appointed Sister Marie superior at Incarnation Convent in Philadelphia in August 1994 through August 1996. It was during this time that Sister had the opportunity to pursue an MS Degree in Pastoral Counseling as well as certification as an Elementary School Counselor. At the end of this term in 1996, Sister Marie continued in community leadership as a Regional Superior until August 2002.
From August 1996 until June 2013, Sister Marie served students utilizing her counseling skills. Sister was a team member of CORA Services that assisted children in need of counseling. Sister was an Elementary School Counselor at Queen of Peace in Ardsley, St. Cecilia in Philadelphia, and St. Charles in Bensalem.
In August 2013, Sister Marie came to the Motherhouse, Villa Maria House of Studies, to assist the Community Archivist. Sister worked at this task as wholeheartedly and diligently as she approached every task.
In August 2018, Sister went to Camilla Hall. Sister’s new ministry was the apostolate of prayer and assistance. Sister joyfully carried out her new assignment until she closed her eyes for the last time on February 17, 2021
During this time of the Covid pandemic, a limited number of family members were invited to attend the Visitation and Funeral Mass for Sister Marie that was private.
