Sister Maureen Rose Waters died in Camilla Hall on July 2, 2023, in the 74th year of her religious life relatively shy of her 95th birthday.
Sister Maureen Rose (known throughout the community as “Aggie Waters”) was born on October 31, 1928; her parents Albert Edward and Rose (Gallagher) Waters raised their family of ten children in St. Gabriel Parish in South Philadelphia.
Aggie attended St. Gabriel grade school (1937-1944), West Catholic Girls’ High School (1944-1948) and ultimately Immaculata College with her degree in Elementary Education.
Agnes entered the Congregation on February 2, 1949; received her religious habit and her name, Sister Maureen Rose, on August 16, 1949, and professed her First Vows on August 15, 1951.
Beginning in April 1951 and ending in August 2011, all of Sister Maureen Agnes’s ministerial service was rendered in the Diocese of Philadelphia. For 60 years, Sister “Aggie Waters” left a legacy of joyful service and kindness in her wake wherever she served, and that is simply her teaching ministry. Sister taught children in St. David, Willow Grove; Our Lady of Angels; St. Martin of Tours; St. Rose of Lima; St. Monica; St. Madeleine Sophie; Immaculate Conception; St. Clement; St. Gabriel; Holy Name; Holy Saviour; St. Joseph, Collingdale; St. Teresa, Valley Forge; St. Dorothy, Drexel Hill; Good Shepherd; and St. Joan of Arc.
In 1998, Sister volunteered to give service to our Sisters in Camilla Hall as a staff member. With her usual compassion and humor, Sister worked in Camilla. In August 1998 Sister assisted with a tutoring project at St. Edmond for a year. Sister then tutored children in St. Joseph, Collingdale for 2 years in remedial math. Next Sister provided general assistance at Our Lady of Fatima School in Secane from August 2002 through August 2007 and returned to Fatima (8/2008) for an additional 3 years where she served as Pastoral Minister in the Parish.
In the fall of 2011 Sister brought all her gifts of loving service to the Camilla Hall where she was a faithful member of the Apostolate of Prayer until her death on Sunday July 2, 2023. Sister “Aggie Waters” went to the Lord with full hands and an even fuller heart. May she rest in peace!
Sister Maureen Rose is survived by her IHM Community, her sister-in-law Ellen (Edward Waters) and her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Sister is predeceased by her parents Edward Albert Waters and Rose Waters (Gallagher), her sisters Rosemarie Waters, Margaret Tyler (James), Alma Marie Smith (Henry), and Alice Waters, her brothers Charles, Thomas (Sophia), James (Elizabeth), Joseph (Margaret) and Edward.
