Sister Marie Lorraine Bruno died in Paoli Hospital on December 29, 2021 in the 69th year of her religious life.
Lorraine Bruno was born on June 30, 1931. Her parents Thomas and Carmella (D’Alessandro) Bruno raised their family, Lorraine and William, in St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Philadelphia. Lorraine attended Drexel Elementary and Vare Junior High School followed by Philadelphia High School for Girls from which she graduated in 1947. Later, while in Community, Sister earned degrees at Immaculata, an M.A. from Catholic University of America, and a Diplome de Langue et de Culture Francaises from the Institut Catholique de Paris.
Lorraine entered the Community on February 11, 1953; she received her religious habit and her religious name, Sister Marie Lorraine, on August 15, 1953, and professed her First Vows on August 15, 1955.
In the fall of 1955 through the school year ending in 1959, Sister taught French to high school students at St. John the Baptist in Manayunk. From 1959 through 1963, Sister taught high school students at St. Katharine of Siena in Wayne. Next, Sister Lorraine taught at Archbishop Prendergast High School in Drexel Hill through June 1971. Sister then moved to Immaculata College where she taught college-age students through 1978.
Sister Marie Lorraine served as Superior of St. Patrick Convent in York while teaching at York Catholic High School. At the end of the academic year 1981, Sister returned to teach at Immaculata through 1985. In the fall of 1985, Sister served as Dean of the Evening Division through August 1990, then, Sister returned to Faculty member status until August 2012. Sister served as an Associate Emerita Foreign Language from August 2012 until her death on December 29, 2021.
In addition to her loving IHM Community at Gillet Convent, our IHM Community as a whole, her family members – nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews – mourn Sister’s passing while grateful to have shared in her goodness, fidelity, and prayerfulness.
