Sister M. Joseph Maureen Curran died in Camilla Hall on June 22, 2021 in the 72nd year of her religious life.
Dorothy Mary Curran was born on February 14, 1930 in Cliffside, New Jersey. Her parents, Charles and Dorothy (Mazzoni) later moved to Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Philadelphia.
Dorothy attended Most Blessed Sacrament Elementary School and West Catholic High School for Girls. Dorothy graduated from “West” in 1947. Later, while in the Community, she earned degrees from Immaculata College and Millersville State.
Dorothy entered the Congregation on the beautiful Feast of Our Lady on February 2, 1949; she received her habit and her religious name Sister Joseph Maureen on August 16, 1949. Sister Joseph pronounced her First Vows on August 15, 1951.
From the fall of 1951 through the school year ending in 1965, Sister Joseph taught children in the elementary grades at the following missions: Sacred Heart, Manoa; Villa Maria in Peru; Assumption, Feasterville; and St. Gabriel, Philadelphia.
In the fall of 1965 through the school year ending in 1981, Sister taught high school students at the following: Archbishop Prendergast, Drexel Hill; York Catholic, York; Denis J. O’Connell, Virginia; and Immaculata, Somerville, NJ.
In the fall of 1981 through June 1987, Sister taught 7th grade children at St. Veronica in Philadelphia for five years and one year at Holy Name in Philadelphia.
In September 1987 through June 2002, Sister Joseph Maureen taught Spanish at Notre Dame High School in Easton. It was at Notre Dame that Sister worked and taught with the now Bishop Alfred A. Schlert who celebrated Sister’s Funeral Mass.
Sister served her final two years in a formal classroom setting at Immaculata High School in Somerville, NJ. In August 2004 through September 2007, Sister taught in the Literacy Program at St. John Bosco in Hatboro.
Sister Joseph Maureen began her ministry as an active member of the Apostolate of Prayer at Camilla Hall in September 2007 and served faithfully, as always, until her death on June 22, 2021.
Her parents Charles and Dorothy (Mazzoni) Curran and her brothers-in-law Paul and John predecease Sister. Her sisters Marilyn Dressel (Paul), Patricia McNamara (John) and her nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews survive Sister.
Most Reverend Bishop Alfred A. Schlert celebrated Sister’s Funeral Mass and delivered the homily on Saturday, June 26 at 10:30 AM. Reverend Donald McNamara joined Bishop at the altar. May our dear Sister Joseph Maureen rest in peace.
