Sister Janice Mary Sobczak died in Camilla Hall on Thursday, August 17, 2023, in the 58th year of her religious life.
Janice Marie Sobczak was born on July 14, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan. Janice’s parents Wallace J. and Opal Cameron raised their family of three children in St. John the Apostle Parish in Hialeah, FL.
Janice attended Elementary School at St. Clair Shores (1952-1959) and St. John the Apostle (1958-1961. Janice then attended Notre Dame Academy in Miami, Florida (1961-1965). While in Community, Sister earned an A.B. degree in Theology and an M.A. from St. Charles Seminary in Systemic Theology.
Marie Sobczak entered the Congregation on September 8, 1965, she received her habit and her religious name, Sister Janice Mary on June 27, 1966, and pronounced her First Vows on June 28, 1968.
Shortly after First Profession, Sister Janice began her teaching ministry. Sister taught elementary grade children in SS. Peter and Paul in Decatur, GA; Annunciation in Bellmawr, NJ; Our Lady of Grace in Penndel; Holy Innocents in Philadelphia; Epiphany in Florida; and a second trip to SS. Peter and Paul; and St. Anselm in Philadelphia.
In the fall of 1995 through the school year ending 1999, Sister Janice served as the Superior in the convent, and a Pastoral Minister in St. Joan of Arc Parish. Sister next served in Epiphany Parish in Florida as a fifth-grade teacher and Superior in the convent from August 1999 through the school year ending August 2001.
During the period between August 2001 and August 2003, Sister Janice had the opportunity to undergo a Chaplain Residency (VITAS, in Miami, VITAS® Healthcare is a provider of end-of-life care in the United States). From August 2003 through August 2016, Sister served as a Chaplain in Aventura Hospital.
In August 2016, Sister Janice brought her gifts of pastoral ministry to serve our Sisters in Camilla Hall. Sister Janice cared for our Sisters faithfully until the ravages of cancer made it impossible. Sister died peacefully on August 17, 2023. God rest her dear soul.
In addition to her IHM Community, Sister is survived by her brothers Barrie Sobczak (Kathie) and Robert Sobczak (Donna) and her nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Sister Janice is predeceased in death by her parents Wallace J. and Opal (Cameron) Sobczak.
