IHM Presence September 2024

Welcome to the IHM Presence

Sharing Our IHM Charism and Spirit with You!

Dear Friends of the IHM Congregation,

The IHM Sisters are pleased to announce a bold new initiative on the part of the Congregation. Today, on the feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we place under her special patronage the launch of our new monthly communication to the many people who, through the years, have so generously supported our mission and ministry to God’s people. Our outreach effort is intended to be a point of light, a “bright spot” in your very busy lives connecting you in a more meaningful way with the charism and mission of the IHM Congregation. It will highlight our Alphonsian spirituality and provide helpful information on the many enrichment opportunities offered by the Congregation throughout the year. Included in this September communication is a link to the brochure outlining the Fall 2024 offerings from our three retreat centers, as well as an opportunity to attend an upcoming Holy Hour of Adoration and Prayer.

Through the years, you have reached out to the Congregation with on-going encouragement, enthusiasm and support for all things IHM. In taking this initial step it is our prayer that, in some small way, this monthly communication will strengthen our relationship with you and touch your lives with the lived IHM charism graces of love, creative hope and fidelity.

About our Patron . . . Saint Alphonsus Liguori

Every religious congregation has patron saints who influence their way of life and their prayer. The spirituality of the IHM Congregation, finds its origin in the spirituality that has been passed down to us from our patrons, St. Alphonsus Liguori and St. Teresa of Avila. It is the spirituality of St. Alphonsus in particular that influenced Redemptorist Father Louis Florent Gillet and Mother Theresa Maxis, the founders of the IHM Congregation.

St. Alphonsus was an 18th century Neapolitan gentleman born to a noble family, but somewhat impoverished. He was the eldest of seven children and it became obvious through his young life, that he possessed the God given gifts of art, music, prose, and poetry which he later used in his ministry as a bishop and theologian. He was tutored at home until he entered the University of Naples where he received doctoral degrees in civil and canon law at the age of sixteen. He had a prosperous future ahead of him, however, his attention to God’s voice within him and extraordinary sensitivity to the immensity of people’s sufferings compelled him to give his life over to God. His passion was to make God’s redeeming love accessible to everyone, especially the poor and spiritually abandoned. His sense of mission was rooted in a spirituality that was fueled by prayer, by devotion to the Blessed Mother, and by a focus on the three-fold mystery of God’s redeeming love in the Incarnation, in Redemption, and in the Holy Eucharist. During his years of ministry, St. Alphonsus founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer on November 9,1732 in Scala, Italy. St. Alphonsus held the belief that God is lovingly present in all the daily and ordinary happenings of our lives.

Uniting Our Spirituality with St. Alphonsus

The spirituality of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is grounded in the tradition of Saint Alphonsus Liguori whose passion was to make the redeeming love of Jesus Christ accessible to every person, especially the spiritually abandoned poor and the marginalized of our society.

Alphonsian spirituality highlights:

  • Reverence for prayer
  • Praying the Stations of the Cross
  • Love for God and others
  • Devotion to the Blessed Sacrament
  • The importance of Marian Devotions
  • Service to God and the Church

There are so many beautiful aspects of this spirituality that we would like to share with you, our IHM friends, throughout this coming year.
